It is surrounded by hotel complexes, resorts, camps, and sports facilities. Nearby is Brijuni national park, formerly the summer residence of late Yugoslav president Josip Broz Tito. Roman villas and temples still lie buried among farm fields and along the shoreline of surrounding fishing and farming villages. The coastal waters offer beaches, fishing, wreck dives to ancient Roman galleys and World War I warships, cliff diving, and sailing.[17] Pula is the end point of the EuroVelo 9-cycle route that runs from Gdańsk on the Baltic Sea through Poland, Czechia, Austria, Slovenia, and Croatia. Fažana (Croatian pronunciation Fasana, Italian pronunciation: is a village and a municipality on the western coast of Istria, in Croatia. Fažana is a picturesque fishing village on the southwest coast of the Istrian peninsula.
Fažana je još u doba Rimljana bila poznata po ribarstvu, kao i uzgoju maslina i vinove loze. Ulje i vino tada su se prevozili u amforama, pa je u Fažani početkom 1. stoljeća otvorena i radionica za proizvodnju tih antičkih posuda. Prema žigovima na njima, otkriveno je da su prvi vlasnici bili članovi senatorske obitelji Lecanii. Amfore pune maslinovog ulja i vina proizvedenog od fažanske loze uglavnom su završavale u današnjoj Austriji, Mađarskoj i Sloveniji, ali i u sjevernoj Italiji, a ponekad čak i u središtu Carstva – Rimu!
Tijekom srednjeg vijeka izgrađena je većina danas vidljivih sakralnih objekata te je Fažana u to doba postala relativno veliko lokalno središte. Tako je primjerice sredinom 18. stoljeća Pula imala oko 700 stanovnika, svega 200-tinjak više od Fažane. Danas je taj omjer neusporedivo veći – Pula po popisu stanovništva iz 2011. godine ima preko 55.000 stanovnika, a Fažana tek nešto više od 3.000.
U 20. stoljeću Fažana se od pretežno poljoprivredno-ribarskog mjesta razvila u pravo urbano središte. Bilo je otvoreno i nekoliko tvornica, među kojima je posebno bila poznata ona za preradu ribe, prije svega srdela. Ista je već 50-ih godina premještena, no tradicija ‘štovanja’ srdela nastavila se do danas (više o tome ispod). Kako se bližio kraj tisućljeća, tako su tvornice polako zatvarane, a Fažana se sve više okretala turizmu. Veliku ulogu u tome svakako je odigrao razvoj Brijuna nakon što su 1983. godine proglašeni nacionalnim parkom. Hrvatska neovisnost i početak trećeg tisućljeća donijeli su Fažani status samostalne općine, čime je turizam dobio novi impuls te je Fažana od svega 136.000 noćenja 2001. deset godina kasnije više nego ušesterostručila promet.
